Diving in Fakarava: north or south, and where to stay?

Updated on

Start with the dives you want to do before choosing where to stay. A base near Rotoava lets you plan north-pass dives and explore a possible day trip south. If the south pass is your main focus, compare staying there too.

Two passes, two different outings

Garuae is the north pass; Tumakohua lies in the south near Tetamanu. Staying in the north does not put you next to the south pass’s famous shark wall.

At Garuae, Kaina describes drift dives through coral canyons and the area known as Alibaba, along with dives on nearby reefs. Grey reef sharks and schools of fish feature in the centre’s descriptions. This gives you a reason to spend time in the north even if the south first caught your attention.

Kaina Plongée offers diving at both passes. Tell the team about your experience, your last dive and what you hope to see before planning your days. The centre decides which sites and conditions suit you.

Allow a full day for the south pass

The south pass is known for its concentrations of grey reef sharks. Kaina Plongée runs day excursions from the north, with a boat journey and dives. These are subject to conditions, rather than guaranteed daily departures.

The centre notes that wind can cause postponements and confirms outings close to departure. If the south pass is essential to your trip, contact the team before fixing your nights and keep some flexibility. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Plan with Vincent and Kaina Plongée

I can put you in touch with Vincent and the Kaina Plongée team to plan dives suited to your experience and interests. Mention your plans in your stay request; the centre will confirm sites, spaces, conditions and prices.

Travelling with a non-diver? Ask whether they can join your chosen outing. Some south-pass excursions can include snorkelling, but check this for your date.

A bungalow near Rotoava between dives

Fakarava Lodge is on the ocean side, around 2 km from Rotoava and the airport. It makes a base for combining diving and time exploring the atoll. Agree your meeting point and transport with the dive centre.

Koeha and Kaiga have private kitchens; Korora and Korori use a shared kitchen. Explore the accommodation pages for beds and current rates.
